Fossil Gen 5 smartwatches have been on the market for over a year, but now comes the version with 4G LTE modem; so far they only had Bluetooth and GPS connectivity, while the 5E variants also did without GPS.
The heart of the platform always remains the same: the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 SoC, which is fast enough to guarantee a reasonably smooth user experience, but lacks a bit in terms of autonomy – it is difficult to exceed the full day of use. . Too bad, in short, that there is not the most recent and best optimized Snapdragon Wear 4100, which continues to be difficult to find.
In any case, Fossil Gen 5 LTE includes heart rate, GPS, altimeter, and ambient lighting sensors. There is a speaker that is water-resistant and also suitable for swimming. There are two colors of the case: black and rose gold. The size is only one, which is 45 mm in diameter. The management of LTE connectivity takes place through the eSIM module. For the moment it is only available with the US operator Verizon. At the moment there are no details on prices and availability.
At the same time, at CES 2021 Fossil launched other smartwatches belonging to the brands it controls:
Michael Kors Darci and MKGO are based on the Gen 5E platform, the one without GPS we were talking about above. Starting prices $ 250.
Skagen Jorn Hybrid HR is based on a less evolved platform, without Wear OS: it has analog hands that move on an e-paper dial. The cases are 38 or 42 mm, and there are several color combinations available. The smart features are pretty basic, but the autonomy is about 2 weeks.
